FortiMail Email Security Platform Offers Unique Configuration Options and Superior Accuracy Rates. Fortinet - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. ("OTH"), a leading player in the international telecommunications market, has deployed Fortinet's FortiMail™ multi-layered email security platform to protect its corporate email servers and 250 users against spam and viruses. OTH chose the FortiMail appliance for its superior accuracy rates and unique configuration options including high availability (HA), shared quarantine and transparent mode.

With more than 80 million subscribers as of March 31st, 2009, OTH is among the largest and most diversified network operators in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. At OTH, all the information exchanged between the corporate headquarters and OTH subsidiaries and vendors is communicated by email. Email is therefore a mission-critical business application on which all corporate employees and executives rely. Unfortunately, the previous third-party security software installed on the Exchange servers could not cope with the high amount of spam received everyday and soon turned out to be ineffective both in terms of robustness and accuracy.

After a comparative evaluation of the main email security solutions available on the market, OTH opted for Fortinet's FortiMail platform for the following reasons: it scored the highest accuracy rate (99.8%); it offered high availability (HA) configuration and shared quarantine for maximum up-time; and it could operate in a transparent mode, limiting the impact on OTH's other network security settings.

"Ninety percent of the 1.5 million daily emails received in our headquarters is spam. It was therefore critical for us to implement an enterprise-class security solution to maintain efficient business communications," said Mina Samir, IT security manager at OTH. "Since we moved to FortiMail, our management and employees have appreciated the huge decrease in the quantity of spam emails they receive. From an IT perspective, FortiMail is definitely an enterprise-class email security solution, which provides us with a superior level of protection, reliability, management and reporting."

OTH deployed a cluster of FortiMail-2000A email security systems to filter the entire inbound email traffic going through OTH's corporate servers with minimal downtime. OTH also subscribed to the FortiGuard® Antispam and Antivirus Services powered by Fortinet's 24x7 Global Threat Research Team to get automatic and continuous signature updates and ensure its FortiMail platforms are kept up to date to help protect against the latest spam, viruses and spyware.

In addition, OTH uses FortiMail's detailed logging and customized reporting functionalities to get granular information on all malicious emails received, blocked and quarantined. This information is very useful to OTH's IT department, which runs daily reports to get antivirus and anti-spam event logging, for analyzing the caught spam and learning about the technique they use.

"Spam has an increasingly negative effect on business by impacting corporate resources and reducing employee productivity," said Patrice Perche, Fortinet's EMEA Vice President. "In a highly competitive environment such as the telco market, communication efficiency is key. We're very pleased to see that, thanks to the high performance, reliability and flexibility of our FortiMail platform, OTH employees are now virtually spam-free and can concentrate on business again."

Fortinet - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced its FortiDB family of database security appliances now provides vulnerability assessment (VA) support for MySQL Enterprise™ from Sun Microsystems. Certification with MySQL Enterprise assures customers that FortiDB appliances have gone through the proper testing requirements for these complex database environments and further extends Fortinet’s solution to detect and safeguard against today’s enterprise data concerns that cross over deeply into open source applications. FortiDB works by identifying the weakness within a database, alerting system administrators of potential threats and offering remediation advice.

MySQL™ is the world’s most popular open source database because of its fast performance, high reliability, ease-of-use and dramatic cost savings. MySQL reduces the total cost of ownership for customers by lowering hardware expenditures and reducing administration, engineering and support costs. Through the MySQL Enterprise Connection Alliance (MECA) partner program, Fortinet extends its database protection for MySQL Enterprise’s growing subscriber base and provides a stronger line of security support with the FortiDB appliance for vulnerability assessment. With this latest certification, FortiDB now supports heterogeneous environments within MySQL Enterprise, in addition to Oracle, DB2, Sybase and SQL Server.

“As MySQL customers grow and evolve their database management practices, the need for security becomes more important,” said Nicolas Pujol, head of MySQL Alliances & Channels, Sun Microsystems. “Fortinet is a great option for MySQL Enterprise subscribers looking to secure complex heterogeneous database environments from operational and reputational damage that can be inflicted on an improperly protected enterprise.”

FortiDB vulnerability assessment solutions provide an automated, cost-effective and centralized solution for database application security, with evaluation and remediation advice for common compliance requirements integrated into the appliance. By identifying weaknesses in databases that can be open for exploitation, the FortiDB family of appliances helps to prevent the theft of proprietary and personal data by hackers that may appear to be legitimate users.

“With growing concerns over the protection of consumer and corporate data combined with the heightened focus on compliance regulations, such as those highlighted by the Payment Credit Card Industry, more and more customers are looking for ways to better protect their databases,” said Anthony James, vice president of products, Fortinet. “We’re pleased to be certified for MySQL Enterprise so that DBAs in these environments can confidently secure important data in their database and do so cost effectively with Fortinet.”

The French Ministry of Culture and Communication Deploys Fortinet's FortiMail

Add this article to:
The French Ministry of Culture and Communication Deploys Fortinet's FortiMail Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

Fortinet's Dedicated Email Security Platform Provides Superior Technology, Efficiency and Ease of Use. Fortinet - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that the French Ministry of Culture and Communication has deployed Fortinet FortiMail™ multi-layered email security platform and FortiGuard® Antispam Service to block unwanted spam from its 10,000 internal email accounts. The government organization selected FortiMail for its superior technology, the efficiency of its multi-layered email security and its seamless deployment and management.

With traffic of 3 to 4.5 million emails a day, 97 percent of which consists of spam, the messaging infrastructure of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication was regularly saturated, provoking up to one-hour delays in email delivery. The server solution in place caused serious maintenance and efficiency issues and quickly became obsolete. At the end of last year, the ministry's IT network department decided to look for a dedicated hardware solution that would offer robust anti-spam protection and allow for a turnkey deployment as well as a greater efficiency both in terms of security and management.

After considering solutions from the main market-leading security vendors, including Ironport, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication selected Fortinet and its FortiMail-2000A email security platform because of its superior technology, accuracy of detecting spam and ease of use.

"We used to receive regular complaints from users about the amount of spam they were receiving and the impact on their productivity. It was therefore critical for us to find an email security solution that would effectively eliminate spam without, of course, stopping valid emails or slowing down network traffic," said Jean-Séverin Lair, CIO at the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. "Not only does FortiMail address those requirements but it also offers unique advantages such as centralized administration, high availability and the fact that key filters are included at no additional cost."

The French Ministry of Culture and Communication deployed two FortiMail-2000A appliances in high availability mode for transparent failover. One FortiMail appliance acts as a gateway in front of the ministry's email server, stopping spam before it enters the network, while the other FortiMail is installed in a passive mode. Since the deployment of the FortiMail appliances, all emails are continuously synchronized between the two platforms, including the emails in quarantine and the ones in queue. The FortiMail platform's dynamic protection is based on the FortiGuard Antispam Service, which uses both a sender IP reputation database and a spam signature database, along with sophisticated spam filtering tools on FortiMail and agents, to detect and block a wide range of spam messages.

The ministry also installed a FortiAnalyzer™-2000A analysis appliance for logging, analyzing and reporting. The appliance securely aggregates log data from FortiMail platforms and allows the IT network department to issue daily technical reports and a weekly report to its executive team. FortiAnalyzer provides advanced security management functions such as quarantined file archiving, event correlation, vulnerability assessments, traffic analysis and archiving of email, Web access, instant messaging and file transfer content.

"Anti-spam protection has become a business necessity for all types of organizations, which must find an effective solution to maintain productivity, preserve network bandwidth and reduce the amount of processing power required to keep unwanted traffic out of the network," said Patrice Perche, vice president of EMEA sales for Fortinet. "We're very pleased to see that, with references such as the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, Fortinet's FortiMail platform is getting lot of traction in the high end market as it combines robust threat protection with great usability, reducing system resource consumption and operational expenses."

FortiMail-2000A is a multi-layered email security platform that removes unwanted spam and provides maximum protection for blended email-related threats. FortiMail enables enterprises to increase productivity by reducing unwanted spam messages and facilitates regulatory compliance through advanced email content archiving and routing.

Fortinet Consolidated Security Platform Gains Momentum Among U.S. Federal Customers Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

Federal Certifications, Powerful Technology and Fast ROI are Reasons for Fortinet's Success with U.S. Government Agencies. Fortinet - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced the company has developed a strong base of support among U.S. federal government customers, growing its federal sales by more than 70 percent from 2007 to 2008.

Fortinet has increased its focus to better serve this customer segment and the associated value-added resellers (VARs) by launching a separate and specific Fortinet Federal FortiPartner™ Program (FFPP); gaining numerous federal certifications for its flagship FortiGate® multi-threat security product line; increasing the federal-focused sales force by more than 100 percent; and opening a dedicated federal sales office in Herndon, VA. These developments, combined with the strength and cost-effectiveness of Fortinet's consolidated security approach, have created a groundswell of support from many U.S. federal government customers including the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force, civilian agencies and the intelligence community.

"The U.S. federal customer segment has a unique set of requirements and must follow stringent guidelines in their technology information assurance certifications and procurement processes; it's been Fortinet's knowledge of and ability to cater to these requirements - through our own resources and those of our channel partners - that have been key to the success of our program," said Jeff Lake, vice president of federal operations, Fortinet. "Perhaps more than any other segments, federal customers have a critical requirement for broad and robust security, and, in this economy, a very high bar for expense justification and ROI. Fortinet has been able to meet these criteria with a proven consolidated security platform that offers capital and operational savings and a strong command of the government procurement process."

Apollo Information Systems is a federal and commercial VAR who has partnered successfully with Fortinet for the past six years. "Fortinet's continued success with the federal segment is a tribute to their singularly dedicated team serving this customer set and the extensive knowledge they possess about the inner workings of the federal environment," said Jim Wallworth, president and founder, Apollo Information Systems. "Moreover, the proven and highly certified FortiGate network security product line instills great confidence among federal customers and simplifies the purchase/guideline approval process."

Together with Fortinet, Apollo Information Systems addresses customers' information security requirements from the network core to the perimeter and beyond, helping them stay ahead of evolving risks.

Fortinet Federal FortiPartner Program
Launching this month, the Fortinet Federal FortiPartner Program includes three levels of partner classifications - Statesman, Dignitary and Ambassador. The program is further customized to protect partners working in the Federal Acquisition Regulations landscape with federal-specific renewal/deal registration and GSA price adjustments. This is an important benefit for registered partners as the federal procurement process typically requires three competitive quotes.

* Statesman - Statesman FortiPartners are organizations committed to delivering superior security solutions to their customers. They are interested in enhancing their partnership with Fortinet and taking initial steps toward a successful relationship. Statesman FortiPartners have a working familiarity with Fortinet's low-to-mid range multi-threat security solutions and can deliver the solutions that best fit small-to-medium business security concerns.
* Dignitary - Dignitary FortiPartners have achieved proven success with Fortinet solutions and are committed to the continued adoption of Fortinet technologies in the marketplace. They deliver the full spectrum of Fortinet's solution set and they have both a certified Fortinet Certified Network Security Administrator (FCNSA) and Fortinet Certified Network Security Professional (FCNSP) on staff to assist with any variety of implementation needs, whether a small branch solution or a core headquarter deployment.
* Ambassador - Ambassador FortiPartners are experts in delivering Fortinet's superior, next generation multi-threat security solution to their customers and have demonstrated success across all Fortinet technologies. They have full access to Fortinet's solution set and they have two FCNSAs and two FCNSPs on staff to suit any complex deployment requirements and deliver exceptional levels of support and service.

Federal Certifications
The success that Fortinet's FortiGate multi-threat security appliances have experienced with federal customers can be attributed to the numerous federal certifications the products have received. FortiGate appliances have the following certifications: JITC IPv6, Common Criteria EAL4+, Common Criteria Medium Robustness (in process), FIPS 140-2 Level 2, and FDCC SCAP. These certifications help to assure that Fortinet products have met the guidelines mandated by NIAP, NIST and the Department of Defense and expedite the purchase approval process for federal agencies.

Federal Sales Team
In 2008, Fortinet doubled its team of federally focused sales and engineering resources and opened a dedicated office in Herndon, VA. The team, some of whom hold Top Secret or Secret clearances, is comprised of professionals with numerous years of experience servicing the U.S. federal segment.

Fortinet Announces First Quarter 2009 Corporate and Financial Highlights Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

Strong Market Demand and Solid Business Execution Help Network Security Appliance Leader Grow Revenue, Billings and Profits

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 1, 2009 - Fortinet® - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced continued financial growth and profitability for the first quarter of 2009 ending March 29, 2009. Despite lingering macro-economic challenges across all sectors, Fortinet continued to achieve financial success, generating $60 million in billings and increasing revenue by 20 percent to $55 million as compared to 1Q08. Fortinet also continued to achieve profitability, generating $5 million in pre-tax profits during the quarter and growing its cash balance to end the first quarter of 2009 with $129 million in total cash and short-term investments. Fortinet credits its consistent and predictable financial performance to a time-tested and evolving technology platform, and the recent broadening of its portfolio with new solutions that secure additional layers of the network.

"Enabling more powerful and differentiated technology with even greater efficiencies and growing our installed based through portfolio expansion is the dual-pronged strategy that Fortinet has embraced over the past 12 months as we lay the foundation for growth," said Ken Xie, founder, president and CEO of Fortinet. "The products and business execution you'll see from Fortinet the remainder of 2009 will echo this strategy, which has already received strong support from some of our biggest enterprise and carrier customers."

First Quarter 2009 Financial Highlights
Fortinet experienced growth in a number of financial metrics in 1Q09, increasing revenues, billings, total cash and short-term investments and profits. The company grew revenues 20 percent to $55 million compared to 1Q08 and generated $60 million in billings during the quarter. Fortinet's deferred revenues grew by 25 percent to $177 million, total cash and short-term investments grew by 31 percent to $129 million (after use of $8M of cash to re-purchase company shares from certain selling stockholders during 1Q09) compared to 1Q08, and the company continues to have no short or long term debt. Additionally, Fortinet again achieved GAAP operating profitability for 1Q09 and has been operating cash-flow positive each year since 2005.

Fortinet continued to reap the benefits of the growing trend toward technology consolidation due to the capital and operational savings it enables. In addition, solid business execution and tight cost controls helped to sustain profit generation, while a recurring security subscriptions business model contributes to a strong deferred revenue stream. These factors all contributed to continued growth and profit and a solid financial position for Fortinet.

Industry Leadership
Fortinet maintained its leadership position in the worldwide UTM market for 4Q08 and all of 2008, according to analyst firm IDC . This marks the 12th consecutive quarter of UTM leadership for Fortinet. Data from the March 2009 IDC Worldwide Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker also revealed Fortinet's lead in both factory revenue and units shipped for two enterprise ($10K-$24.9K and $25K-$49.9K) and high-end ($50K-$99.9K) price bands - the most significant segments of focus for the company. Data from the IDC report also confirmed Fortinet as the overall leader in UTM factory revenue for Western Europe and Asia Pacific for all of 2008 and 4Q08.

Technology Expansion
In 1Q09, Fortinet released a major software update for its market-leading FortiGate® multi-threat security appliances and expanded its product portfolio to include solutions that secure deeper layers of the network:

* FortiOS™ 4.0 operating system: major firmware upgrade which integrates hundreds of new features to significantly improve the value and functionality of FortiGate security appliances; four of the most notable features include application control, data leakage protection (DLP), WAN optimization and SSL traffic inspection;
* FortiWeb™-1000B: a mid- to large-enterprise product and first in a family of Web security appliances that provide application and XML firewalling to protect, balance and accelerate web applications, databases and the information exchanged between them;
* FortiDB™ Monitoring & Auditing: new capabilities added to database vulnerability management appliances announced in 2008 enable 24x7 or scheduled-based monitoring and a complete audit trail to help organizations meet regulatory compliance. Also, the debut of two new models - the FortiDB-400B and FortiDB-2000B - join the previously announced FortiDB-1000B appliance to round out the family of database security products, offering appropriate sizing for small, medium and large enterprises.

Xie added: "In the current economic climate, customers' predisposition for highly efficient and cost-effective technologies is working strongly in our favor, especially with the release of our newest operating system - FortiOS 4.0 - which adds even more functionality without more cost. More and more companies are seeing the benefits of security consolidation and are increasingly showing their support for this approach, which is validating Fortinet's vision and growth strategy."

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 1, 2009 - Fortinet® - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that Frost & Sullivan issued a report on the company's FortiOS 4.0 technology, the latest firmware upgrade for its FortiGate® multi-threat security appliances. The report touted the release as "bringing network security convergence to the next level" and "casting a spotlight on the evolution of UTM."

* Frost & Sullivan's research supports the innovation found within FortiOS 4.0. The following highlights are from the report: UTM brings an excellent value proposition to the security arena against the backdrop of an increasingly challenging business environment.
* The events in the past six months in the global economy have made the advantages of deploying a UTM more pronounced, with the solution becoming a more acceptable security form factor among the large enterprises.
* The introduction of the FortiOS 4.0 platform by Fortinet has cast the spotlight on the evolution of the UTM solution platform.
* Fortinet has once again taken the bold step of expanding the definition of the UTM and incorporating its notion of technology convergence into it.
* Fortinet's foray into non-security related technologies is going to broaden customer perceptions towards the multitude of possibilities associated with an integrated solution platform.
* Looking ahead, with this latest attempt at redefining the borders of the UTM solution, the future looks certain to move rapidly towards technology convergence.

"Innovation has always been one of Fortinet's greatest strengths, and we're pleased that Frost & Sullivan recognizes the innovation delivered in our latest FortiOS firmware," said Michael Xie, founder, CTO and vice president of engineering. "We are focused more than ever on expanding our vision for consolidated and easily managed network security solutions, and we're continuously updating our FortiOS firmware with innovative new features that meet the evolving needs of our customers."

FortiOS 4.0 integrates hundreds of new features to significantly improve the value and functionality of FortiGate appliances. Following are four of the most notable features of Fortinet's new OS:

Gaming Trojan Is Top Dog in Fortinet May '09 Threatscape Report Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 28, 2009 - Fortinet® - a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced its May 2009 Threatscape Report showed a dominance by the online gaming Trojan, W32/Dropper.PTD, which made up more than one-third of all detected malware activity of the past month. Threat activity was higher overall, with malware up 66 percent from the April Threatscape Report, vulnerabilities and active exploits at their highest this year and spam rates higher than recorded last month. Key highlights of the May Threatscape Report follows:

* Gaming Trojan Dominates: W32/Dropper.PTD, the most aggressive of the online gaming Trojans, claimed 34.5 percent of malware activity for the month, representing the strongest surge by a single malware variant since September 2008.
* Targeting China: For the second consecutive month, China (44.86%) led the pack with the highest percentage of malware activity worldwide due largely to online gaming. This came by courtesy of gaming Trojan W32/Dropper.PTD, which pursued Thailand as its second favorite target. The U.S. (37.81%) again came in second place, with Japan (33.52%), India (16.19%) and Taiwan (15.26%) making up the rest of the most-targeted regions around the globe.
* New Highs for Vulnerabilities and Active Exploits: highest reported rates so far this year. Out of 140 newly covered vulnerabilities this period, 46.4 percent were reported to be actively exploited, well up from last report (31.3%). The most active exploit overall this period was the notorious MS08-067 vulnerability, first made infamous through Conficker. This exploit (MS.DCERPC.NETAPI32.Buffer.Overflow) targets a vulnerability in Microsoft's Server service.
* Spam Targets Swine Flu Fear: Spam levels were at their highest at the beginning of May, but there has been an increase overall from the last report. The Canadian Pharmacy gang has been aggressive and currently pushing TamiFlu as one of their main "products," hoping to draw potential victims to their wares to take advantage of the recent swine flu scare.

"Criminals - both online and offline - target easy money, and for the cyber underworld, what continues to pay off is online gaming," said Derek Manky, project manager, cyber security and threat research, Fortinet. "While online gaming threats seem to be most prevalent in Asian countries for the time being, we believe a similar movement will hit North America in the near future as cybercriminals uncover new ground. They have already begun to expand their horizons."

The FortiGuard research team compiled threat statistics and trends for May based on data collected from FortiGate® network security appliances and intelligence systems in production worldwide. Customers who use Fortinet's FortiGuard Subscription Services should already be protected against the threats outlined in this report.

FortiGate-30B and FortiWifi-30B Priced for Growing Market of Telecommuters, ROBO and SOHO Environments

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 19, 2009 - Fortinet®- a market- a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced the FortiGate®-30B, a multi-threat security device that offers powerful network protection technology used by enterprise customers to the growing population of telecommuters, remote/branch outlets and small businesses. Designed to accommodate the ease-of-use and price sensitivities of the smallest networked environments, the FortiGate-30B provides an integrated security architecture for broad protection in a compact desktop form factor. In addition, Fortinet has also introduced the FortiWifi-30B to support small wireless networked environments.

"While deploying multiple security devices may be impractical at corporate headquarters and larger sites, it is largely impossible at many remote locations and small offices due to configuration and cost constraints," said Michael Xie, CTO and co-founder of Fortinet. "Nevertheless, the need for strong protection is constant and real and no less demanding, which is why we've enabled the same level of security inspection on the FortiGate-30B as we do on our highest-end, integrated security devices."

The FortiGate-30B and FortiWifi-30B can support a number of ROBO/SOHO environment scenarios, and can be centrally managed by enterprises and service providers through Fortinet's FortiManager™ and FortiAnalyzer™ products, regardless of deployment size:

* Remote Sites - Large organizations working to provide network access to remote telecommuters, retail outlets and branch offices are facing the dilemma of how to do so securely, efficiently and cost-effectively. Remote offices are typically at higher risk since it is harder to see what employees are doing on the network, and who/what is being attacked. In order to provide secure network connectivity and effective protection from malicious attacks, a single device uniting firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web content filtering, antivirus, data leakage protection and antispyware, specifically designed for these environments, is required.
* Retail Outlets and Branch Offices - Dedicated VPN tunnels have become a standard method of providing access and conveying real time inventory and sales information to corporate headquarters. Once connected, these networks can introduce malware and Trojans acquired by their endpoints if the remote network is not adequately protected. Multiple security enforcement technologies such as firewall, intrusion prevention, antivirus and antimalware must be deployed to protect the entire distributed network and to maintain compliance with PCI, HIPPA and GLBA regulations. With three internal security ports, the FortiGate-30B and FortiWifi-30B offer complete network security protection and dedicated VPN access in a single device that can be provisioned and managed from anywhere in the world.
* Remote Telecommuters - Unprotected home networks of telecommuting employees pose a security risk to the central enterprise network, which is further compounded with network usage by other family members, who must be kept separate from work-related access. The FortiGate-30B offers a single solution that provides total network protection for the telecommuter's entire network, while simultaneously offering dedicated VPN access to corporate resources. Multiple internal security ports support multiple devices on the internal interface, and authentication techniques ensure that only the telecommuter's endpoint is allowed access to corporate resources.
* Small/Home Offices - Small businesses have many of the same security requirements and regulation mandates as do large businesses to protect their data and that of their customers. The FortiGate-30B offers the same level of security inspection in a single, easy-to-deploy and cost-conscious appliance.

Wireless Security
The FortiWifi-30B adds a built-in wireless access point to the broad, multi-threat protection of FortiGate appliances, making it ideal for small remote offices, retail outlets and telecommuting environments. It offers standard 802.11 b/g support, a Wide Area Network (WAN) port for securing internet connections, and four integrated switch ports for multi-user environments.

Malware Peaks, China Targeted on Fortinet's April '09 Threatscape Report Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

Highest Malware Volumes Recorded This Year, Online Gaming Makes Asia Activity Swell

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May. 6, 2009 - Fortinet®- a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced findings from its April 2009 Threatscape Report, which shows new and persistent malware faces contributing to the highest malware volumes detected this year – online gaming and adware threats largely among them. China received the brunt of this month's malware attack, doubling its share from the last report. Fortinet's FortiGuard® Global Security Research team made the following observations in April:

* Game-on for New Faces: Four new variants landed in April's Top 10 malware list, three of which were online gaming Trojans. The fourth narrowly missed the list at the eleventh position. But W32/Virut.A is still king of the hill, claiming first position for two consecutive months and building on a year-long run within the Top 10 list. Collectively, these threats formed a significant portion of April's detected activity. The lucrative marketplace created by online gaming has attracted cyber crime with haste, predominantly in China. China leap-frogged over Japan and the U.S. with a 44.86 percent global malware share, nearly doubling its 24.17 percent share from the last report.
* Waledac's Resilience: One of the most active malware families, Waledac launched a fifth campaign since the beginning of this year, serving up malicious variants disguised as SMS spying software. Waledac, like many blended threats, is multi-functional with the ability to receive and spew custom spam templates, launch denial of service attacks, and download further components. It was also spotted on Conficker's network which, in concert with its own various campaigns, has further helped this family gain momentum.
* Conficker.C Peers: As we anticipated, no significant activity occurred with Conficker.C on the much hyped April 1st date; however, soon after, Conficker.C's newly established peer-to-peer network became active. Exploit activity with MS.DCERPC.NETAPI32.Buffer.Overflow (MS08-067) picked up once again during the first week of April, returning to February levels after a significant drop in March. The drop was due to Conficker.C variants ceasing exploit activity, while the subsequent increase can be linked to several factors outside of Conficker. Over 31 percent of new vulnerabilities this period (96 in total) were reported to be actively exploited: 36 of the new vulnerabilities were rated as critical, marking a year high, up from 30 in last month's report.

"April was a busy month for cyber criminals who unleashed the most aggressive malware attacks thus far this year," said Derek Manky, project manager, cyber security and threat research, Fortinet. "We believe this upward trend will endure with online gaming attacks continuing to dominate, especially with Real Money Trading becoming a big business - now an estimated $2 billion annual market."

The FortiGuard research team compiled threat statistics and trends for April based on data collected from FortiGate® network security appliances and intelligence systems in production worldwide. Customers who use Fortinet's FortiGuard Subscription Services should already be protected against the threats outlined in this report.

Fortinet Announces Carrier-Specific Multi-Threat Security Platform

Add this article to:
Fortinet Announces Carrier-Specific Multi-Threat Security Platform Link: http://bit.ly/10K4yM Article:

New FortiCarrier Operating System and Hardware Platform Bring Unique Carrier-Grade Capabilities for VOIP, Mobile Content Security

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May. 5, 2009 - Fortinet®- a market-leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced the release of a carrier-grade version of its FortiGate® multi-threat security platform. The new FortiCarrier™ family integrates many new functionalities to help carriers, service providers, managed security service providers and enterprises better protect their own networks as well as the networks of their customers through cloud-based security delivered as a service. Fortinet’s FortiCarrier platform includes all the capabilities of the FortiGate line plus a specialized "superset" of carrier-class features: securing voice-over-IP infrastructures and mobile operator content, and enabling automated provisioning and management of security policies on a per-user basis. In addition, FortiCarrier provides the intelligent infrastructure to help service providers more easily deliver security as a service to their customers through, among other things, the industry’s only fully virtualized offering to support nine consolidated security features.

The new FortiCarrier features are driven by three key trends: the convergence of content types including data, voice, video and mobile content onto a single network; the proliferation of mobile threats; and the growing popularity of the security-as-a-service business model. The security implications of these trends are addressed through new enhancements to the FortiOS™ Carrier 4.0 operating system and supported by the FortiCarrier-3810A and -5001A-DW hardware platforms.

"A carrier-specific offering for consolidated security would be timely to take advantage of the market’s current propensity toward managed security services, especially under the budgetary pressures of the current economic climate," said Lee Doyle, group vice president and general manager of IDC’s Network Infrastructure and Security Products and Services groups. "There are strong indicators to suggest that this is a business model that is attractive to more than just carriers; large enterprises and small- to mid-MSSPs are also seeing the services opportunity in security and would also benefit from a carrier-grade consolidated security platform."

Carrier-Grade Capable

FortiCarrier is a powerful solution in its ability to offer dual benefits - helping customers with CAPEX and OPEX savings for securing their own networks and enabling a business model for a recurring revenue stream with managed security services. This is enabled by the numerous carrier-specific capabilities Fortinet has added to the FortiCarrier product line, including the following key features:

* Dynamic Security Profiles - Service providers now have the ability to apply automated security policies on a per-user basis and reduce manual configurations, which lowers operational expense. This becomes increasingly valuable for service providers as the growing popularity of managed security services could mean a significant increase in management complexities to support thousands of customers, all with differing security policies.
* Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Security - With the convergence of voice networks onto IP networks, SIP Security protects voice calls exposed to the Internet. FortiOS Carrier contains a SIP firewall which integrates seamlessly with Fortinet’s intrusion prevention service to protect voice infrastructure from rogue traffic and malicious threats.
* Mobile Provider Security - The growing precedence of mobile threats is requiring specific attention to securing mobile content on the millions of handsets in operation today. FortiOS Carrier features three capabilities specific to mobile providers: (1) Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) antivirus and antispam engine to help eliminate malware and spam in messages that use the MMS standard, (2) mobile content filtering to enforce appropriate use policies and (3) a GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP) firewall that is designed for compatibility with 3GPP specifications. The combination of these features offers protection for both the mobile provider’s infrastructure and for end-user devices.

"The carrier and service provider segments are our fastest-growing customer segments and have a unique set of requirements that are addressed with the FortiCarrier platform," said Michael Xie, CTO and co-founder of Fortinet. "The new features of FortiCarrier, combined with powerful virtualization capabilities, mean that MSSPs, carriers, service providers and enterprises can simultaneously replace their stand-alone security equipment and have a consolidated platform for seamlessly rolling out and managing a security services business."

FortiCarrier Product Family

The following three products make up the FortiCarrier family of carrier-grade solutions:
o FortiOS Carrier 4.0 is the software component for FortiCarrier specialized security hardware. In addition to a full suite of security services, FortiOS Carrier 4.0 extends the security operating system with features designed specifically for service provider environments.
o FortiCarrier-3810A platform integrates specialized security into an expandable appliance ideal for many service provider implementations. It supports up to four FortiASIC™-accelerated 10GigE interfaces and offers four Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) expansion bays.
o FortiCarrier-5001A-DW platform is part of a chassis-based security platform and offers the ultimate in performance, flexibility, reliability, and scalability for the largest of service provider implementations. Support for high-density GigE and 10GigE interfaces provides tremendous flexibility and throughput scalability.

FortiOS Carrier 4.0 and the FortiCarrier-3810A and -5001A-DW hardware platforms are all generally available and shipping. Hardware pricing varies based on system configuration. There is no additional charge for FortiOS Carrier software when the applicable hardware platform has an active FortiCare support contract in effect. Additional information on the FortiCarrier product line can be found at http://www.fortinet.com/products/forticarrier/
